Episode Notes

0:00 Stephen

Hey dad. We’re looking at the fortress walls at Dubrovnik. You gave me a jigsaw puzzle of this very scene for Christmas last year and now we’re here putting the pieces together.

00:14 Kerry

There’s the fort on the port side, Dubrovnik little beach and here’s the city walls of the old town from the outside. We walked it from the inside yesterday and now we’re sailing past – just spectacular.

How amazing is this? Yesterday we visited the old town at Dubrovnik. We bought this bookmark with a little boat sailing by and now we’re in the bookmark. This is us sailing by the old town – there it is.

Founded in the 17th century, which is incredible to me. So long ago but the actual city walls that are there now were built in the 12th century. They’re 1,940 meters long, 5.5 meters thick and 25 meters high – incredible – keeping the old town nice and safe.

Picture perfect postcard view, incredible. What a gorgeous day here in Croatia. Stephen’s at the helm and I’m hanging off taking photos.

2:21 Stephen

Amazing! We’re just about to enter the old town of Dubrovnik and do a lot of walking.

Grand Fountain of Onofrio.

We’re heading into the museum, one of the museums, and the oldest pharmacy, might be the oldest in the world.

3:07 Kerry

I’m about to go into one of the oldest pharmacies in the world. I need to get some more tape for my finger. So, why not go here.

3:14 Stephen

Just check the expiry date. It might be a few hundred years out of date.

3:23 Kerry

This pharmacy was actually built in the 13th century so it’s really really old. We had to buy something here.

4:49 Stephen

Hey Kerry!

Where was that restaurant we saw when we first came in? Is it near the stone wall?

4:59 Kerry

I think it had cobbled pavements.

5:02 Stephen

Cobbled pavements and a stone wall – okay.

5:05 Kerry

It might be a thin street. It all looks the same to me. It’s all cobbled pavements and stone walls.

It’s really easy to get lost in here isn’t it Stephen? Ii think we’re going round and round in circles.

5:20 Stephen

We are, and that’s why we’re not lost. Every road leads to the ice cream shop.

This is what it’s all about, ice creams of the world.

5:42 Kerry

I’m trying them all. We missed our Wednesday one so it’s okay.

5:48 Stephen

Lots of good food. Is this the one? Here’s an alleyway which is an opportunity for a restaurant. Apparently they have the best pizza here, according to the waiter.

6:00 Kerry

She asked us where we’re from expecting us to say Australia or somewhere and Stephen goes Hvar. She looks very shocked, very confused that we were talking a mix of Croatian and English and looking very touristy.

Just deciding what we’re going to have for lunch. I’ll find the English version. This menu has seven different languages. Here’s our English one and we’re going to have Hawaiian pizza.

6:48 Stephen

Here comes the best pizza in Dubrovnik.

6:51 Stephen

So the way she told us. We’ll see.

The most exciting thing for us about visiting Dubrovnik was to walk and to see the city walls.

7:02 Stephen

…and they are huge. They’re 25 meters high, five and a half meters thick and it’s almost two kilometres to go right around the perimeter.

7:16 Kerry

I think you’re really going to like this. We’re going to show you that next.

Walls & The Key to Life

7:20 Stephen

Seeing the massive size of these city walls caused us to reflect on some of the massive walls in our own life’s journey.

7:27 Kerry

For me, it was the massive walls of divorce, mental illness and lack of purpose as a result of all of that.

7:35 Stephen

For me it was being rejected by people close to me. It was a fear of failure. It was constantly trying to measure up to other people’s expectations.

These seemingly massive walls in our lives seemed impossible to overcome, massive barriers to hope peace and a future with purpose. But this is what we’ve found. We haven’t had to face these massive walls alone. we’ve faced every one of these walls with our faith in God and our relationship with God. What it’s done for us is to turn these challenges into blessings.

We discovered that there are gates in the walls and God has shown us some of the keys to get through those gates.

8:14 Kerry

God has also used the walls to protect us, preventing the negative plans of others from destroying us.

8:20 Stephen

He’s given us a safe place within the walls to shelter, heal ,restore.

8:28 Kerry

…and rest and He’s also given us a wonderful view when we get to the top of the walls, to see a future full of hope, purpose and of dreams fulfilled.

8:38 Stephen

So instead of these walls being a blockage and a hindrance to us He’s using them as a way to restore and to bring us life .

8:47 Kerry

There’s a wonderful song written by Jason David called these walls. It tells of his story facing massive challenges, health challenges, things that he needed to overcome and how with God’s help he’s on that journey to health wholeness, healing and now telling others that you can do it as well. I think it’s really well worth a look.

9:18 Kerry

Now, with all that introduction about these massive fortress walls city walls of Dubrovnik you want to have a look. Let’s go…

9:30 Stephen

Okay, let’s head up the wall.

9:43 Kerry

Oh, there’s so many steps in Croatia and we managed to find them all.

9:59 Stephen

The fortress wall and we’re going to be walking around.

10:04 Kerry

It’s about two kilometres right around isn’t it.

10:06 Stephen

Something like that. This is just like in the movies.

10:30 Kerry

I’m really amazed at how short these walls on the side are. You could easily just fall over there. That makes me nervous, I’ll stick to this side.

10:48 Stephen

It’s a long way down.

The fortress walls are surrounding the old town of Dubrovnik.

11:16 Kerry

We’re not even at the top yet of Fort Minčeta. A little bit further. I think it was worth it.

12:24 Stephen

So we’ve just walked around the north side Kerry, along all those walls to protect the mighty city of Dubrovnik.

The Most Economical Way To See Dubrovnik

12:36 Kerry

The easiest and the most economical way that we found to see all the sites was to purchase either a one day, a three day or a seven day tourist pass. Most of the tourist destinations for Dubrovnik are included in the pass including the city walls. It was actually very economical because just to see the tourist walls alone was 200 Kuna. Yet, to buy the pass it included the city walls and it was 225 Kuna and it also includes discounts at lots of the restaurants, other major tourist attractions and also the bus to get around the city. So it’s really good value.

We found one day was enough for us. It was really hot so it was great to see everything in one go.

If you’re interested in this, buying the Dubrovnik Tourist Card online is also a 10% discount.

13:31 Stephen

Well Kerry, that’s Dubrovnik, done.

13:32 Kerry

Tick. We loved it and we’re sure you’d like it too.

13:37 Stephen

Let’s get on with the next adventure.
