Episode Notes

Exrtaordinary, Ordinary People

0:00 Stephen

Usually in life, it’s the rich, the famous & the celebrities that get all of the attention and are celebrated. The people that really make a difference in our lives are the people next door, the people we meet day to day, our friends & our neighbors.

Today, we’re going to celebrate somebody that we met that had an impact on our life. So, stay tuned and meet our new friend.

Have you ever met somebody that just makes you feel right at home? That you feel like you’ve known for years. Well that happened to us when we met Tihana in Pula in Croatia. Tihana was our tour guide. In a minute she’s going to tell you a little bit of the story.

What I came away with after meeting Tihana was a sense of somebody who has very genuine & warm hearted that made us feel completely comfortable and relaxed as soon as we met her. Tihana communicated really well and what really stood out to me was her integrity and her thankfulness. She was such a thankful, kind person. I’m so glad to have met her.

Let’s hear a little bit from Tihana and then after that we’ll do a bit of a tour of Pula, thanks to Tihana.

1:30 Tihana

Hi everyone. My name is Tihana and this is a first century amphitheater built by the Romans. It was built outside the city’s defensive walls near a water spring and along the main road that led from Pula to Aquilia and Rome.

The Legend Of The Amphitheatre

1:47 Tihana

One of the legends is that it was built by Emperor Vespasian to honour his great love Antonia Seneda. Antonia was a liberated slave, very hardworking and esteemed.

2:02 Tihana

If you find that story magical I have another one for you. This one is my own and it’s about how I met Kerry & stephen. It all started a year ago when they booked my AirBnb tour but a few days after booking they found out it would be impossible for them to travel to Croatia.

So what happened next? Kerry & Stephen didn’t cancel the tour or ask for a refund. This really surprised me since I was a complete stranger to them at the time. Now, after a year, we finally met. I know now that the reason was their great kindness. We had a great time and now I know they are simply wonderful people.

So dear Kerry & Stephen I would like to thank you for everything and I wish you many happy moments here in Pula. All the best and I hope we’ll meet again.

Pula, Croatia

3:13 Stephen

Welcome to croatia we’re standing in Pula. The history of this place is amazing when you compare it to a country like Australia where we come from. Australia, as a nation, has only been in existence for a of couple hundred years, although there have been people there for thousands of years, but here in Croatia there are buildings that are two and three thousand years old. We’ll show you some of those as we take you on a bit of a tour. Here’s a model of the city of Pula.

3:45 Kerry

There’s the amphitheatre and on this side there’s a castle. We’ll go and have a look at some of those things.

War Heroes

We’re looking at the statues that are remembering war heroes here in Pula. We can see here all these busts of people and many of them are so young but they were the ones that fought for freedom here in Pula.

It’s just amazing to me that here we are at the port where all the boats come in and just straight across the road and up the hill here is the amphitheater. It’s just part of the normal landscape here but it’s so historic. It’s amazing.

Amphitheatre

4:48 Stephen

We’re really excited to be standing here in front of the Arena in Pula Croatia. We found out that construction began on this Arena in BC and ended in AD. So, it was being constructed while Jesus was walking the earth which is amazing. We’re going to go and take a look so let’s go…

We’re heading into the Colosseum, the Arena to have pizza with the lions.

05:31 Kerry

It must be a memorial of some kind.

Hopefully this gives you quite a good look of the inside. We were inside the other night. A town celebrity had passed away and so they opened it up for all the locals to come in and pay respects. We didn’t realise that was what it was. They had music playing so we just went in and had takeaway pizza in there. So, that was really special

Pula City Gates

06:03 Kerry

So this is all part of the city gates around Pula.

Temples

06:51 Kerry

These are the three temples but there are only the backs of two of them and the full building of one now. The names of them were Augustus Temple, the so called Diana Temple and the middle one was a temple of the three Goddesses of Rome.

Bringing The Clasroom To Life

07:22 Stephen

A few years ago we attended Bible College at C3 in Ssydney Australia and one of our lecturers was Katie Haldane. Katie was teaching us all about the temple of Diana and all these ancient times, back in biblical times, and it’s just amazing to be in this environment right now. It’s just like everything we heard in the classroom.

Katie is another one of the women that we’ve met who’s had a major impact on both Kerry and I. Katie has a website called Trash Your Bible. Katie’s a wonderfully, personable woman who is a fantastic teacher and instructor and really helps people to understand the Bible for what it really is and putting it in the context of the actual time when it was written. So, we can understand it really well and apply it to our lives. Make it real.

So thanks for coming on our brief tour of Pula in Croatia. I’m so glad you got to meet Tihana and when you come and visit us in Croatia make sure you stop by Pula and we’ll provide the details for Tihana so you can look her up and she can give you a tour. She’ll make you feel really welcome. Tihana feels just like family to us.
